WOW. This was my first year at SXSW and it will now be a yearly event for me as long as I am in this field. It was nice to be around great minds and successful leaders from all over the world. I was able to sit in the same room and ask questions to the people in charge of websites that you and I use on a daily basis. Austin is also the perfect place for this gathering of geeks and designers. I will share with you some of the things I learned while at SXSW.

Your meetings suck and it’s your fault
This was a cool discussion to attend! We have all been in meetings that we dont want to be in. Kevin M Hoffman from Happy Cog talks about having a goal and having a good facilitator to keep things on track. If you are not contributing het up and leave!

Flash is dead? vs. Long live Flash.
This was a good discussion on the pros and cons of Flash and HTML5. I can say that I have been leaning on developing more HTML5 sites rather than Flash, mainly because of the iPad. What I learned is that It’s not about me, it’s about the user experience. The web is just evolving, flash is not dying. We should focus more on the user experience rather than the tools we want to use to build it.

Creative leadership in design environments
Sarah B Nelson gave a great presentation on creative leadership. As managers and leaders we should be more aware of people’s feelings and attitudes. Laying out goals and expectations is a great way to kick off a project.

Get it out on the table early

These are a just examples of the presentations and workshops I attended. It was so much information to be digested in a short period of time!
